DINOSAUR PARTY TIPS

Invitations

Use card and cut out large dino foot prints. Write the party details on the back. Alternatively, if time is short, you may prefer our preprinted Dinosaur party invites.

Food and Preparation

  • You've enough to do on the day so why not prepare the food in advance and serve in handy Discover Dinosaur Food Boxes to match your theme. You can add a Dinosaur skeleton to each food box for a little something extra. If it's hot food you want and on the quick, you can take your pre-prepared food boxes to a local Fish n' Chip shop and have them deliver your order.
  • Give each child a Dinosaur party blowout to accompany their meal
  • Alternatively create your own Dinosaur treats!
    • Dinosaur burgers and sandwichs (use a Dinosaur shaped pastry cutter)
    • Dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets with dipping sauces
    • Dinosaur dipping sauces - Ketchup as red lava and brown/BBQ sauce as mud
    • Dinosaur bones - Twiglets
    • Dinosaurs stuck in the mud - Chocolate pudding with gummy dinosaurs
    • Bronto bites - BBQ meatballs
    • Individual pizzas - Before cooking, put out toppings and let the children make their own pizza
    • Red lava and Green swamp jelly with ice cream
    • Dinosaur cookies
    • Swamp water - Lemonade or apple juice with green food colouring
    • Red lava punch - Lemonade with red food colouring.

Décor

  • Cut out large Dinosaur foot prints and place them from the path outside your house all the way into the party. Consider leading the trail up the stairs to a closed room for example.
  • Use large green plants and giant rocks (these can be real or hand-made) around the room. Hang streamers in various shades of green and brown from the ceiling and put pictures of Dinosaurs on the wall
  • Decorate the party area with Dinosaur Birthday Letter Banners and Dinosaur helium balloons.
  • Use tablecloths, napkins, balloons and other decorative items such as streamers in Dinosaur theme colours like Oranges, purples and Greens. You can also look for Dinosaur Party Plates, Cups and Balloons that carry images of Dinosaurs on them.

Things to do

  • Dinosaur dig - Using a sand pit, bury bones and fossils for the children to find.
  • Fossil making - Pressing leaves, shells, hands, bones and toy dinosaurs into plaster.
  • Ask an adult to dress up as Caveman and give out the party favors at the end of the party. Take a photo of each guest with the caveman and send out with the thank you notes.
  • On arrival at the party, why not give your guests a Dinosaur Party Hat and a home made name badge. Draw the shape of a dinosaur onto a plain label using an orange or red marker pen. This idea is both effective and cost effective. It will also keep your sanity during the games!

Pinata - If you've got time you can make your own Pinata. It's easy to do - simply layer strips of wet newspaper over a balloon leaving a small hole in the back. Allow to dry and repeat the process several times.

Dinosaur Triceratops Pinata

Pop the balloon and stuff your Pinata with sweets and toys. Decorate in Dinosaur Party colours and hang from a piece of string. Children takes turns to bash the Pinata with a stick whilst blindfolded to release the prizes from within.

Dinosaur Stegosaurus Pinata

This is a really fun party game but does take a bit of time and patience and an interest in arts and craft. Alternatively you may prefer to stuff a ready made Dinosaur Brontosaurus Pinata.

DINOSAUR PARTY GAMES

To keep a party going, it’s always advisable to have a numerous supply of activities planned as the playing time of each game often far exceeds the time spent in planning them.

Keep the children busy - here are 10 of our favourites….

1. Dinosaur Hunt 1

Buy a medium sized stuffed or plastic Dinosaur. Have all the children leave the room while the birthday child hides it. Have the children return to "hunt" for the Dinosaur. The child who finds it gets a prize and/or the chance to hide the Dinosaur next.

2. Dinosaur Hunt 2

Either buy a large Dinosaur puzzle or make one from an enlarged picture. Hide all the pieces around the party area and then allow the children to "hunt the Dinosaur".

3. Bone Drop

You will need bone shaped dog biscuits/small plastic bones and a jar or bowl(depending on age). Each child has 5-10 bones each and tries to throw as many as possible into the container from a pre-determined distance. In the event of a tie breaker, use a smaller container or a further distance.

4. Pin the tooth on the Dinosaur or Pin the horn on the Triceratops

Each player takes it in turns to be blindfolded and is given a "tooth/horn" with his/her name on it. With lots of encouragement from the other players the blindfolded player locates the Dinosaur and places the "tooth/horn" on the picture. Leave all the teeth/horns on the picture until everyone has has their turn. The winner is the person who gets closest to the correct place.

5. Caveman says

An adult or the birthday child is Caveman at first. Caveman faces the rest of the group, who stand where they can see Caveman well. Caveman gives commands for the children to follow, such as "Caveman says...Clap your hands" or "Caveman says...Kick your feet". The children are to obey only those commands that begin with the words "Caveman says". If the command does not begin with these words (for example, "Jump up and down"), the players should ignore it. Anyone who does it is out.

6. Dinosaur, Dinosaur, Caveman

Get all the children to sit in a circle. Choose one child to be "it". This child should then walk around the circle tapping the other children on the shoulder or head saying either "Dinosaur" or "Caveman". If the child taps someone and says "Caveman" the child that has been tapped must get up and chase the child that is "it". If the child who is "it" gets the whole way round the circle and sits in the other space without being caught, the child who is Caveman then becomes "it".

7. Follow the Dinosaur

Get the children to follow a leader (maybe start with an adult to get the ball rolling). The children have to follow whatever the leader does as they move around. Suggestions: hopping, hands on head, jumping, running, skipping, silly walks, turning round, waving arms, being an animal, being a posh person etc.

8. Hot fossil

Get all the children to sit in a circle. Pass a toy fossil/bone around the circle to the music. When the music stops whoever is holding the fossil/bone is out. The person left at the end is the winner.

9. Dinosaur Dance

The music is started and the kids must dance. When the music stops the kids must stand perfectly still. If any of them move noticeably they go out, judged by the adult playing the music. If a decision cannot be made then just play another round. Having two or three adults judging is better, and they have to agree on who goes out. If the last two or three kids are identical for three rounds at the end of the game then they all win. More leeway should be given to the little kids.

10. Dinosaurs Bean bag toss

On a foam board draw a Dinosaur with its mouth open. Cut a hole inside the mouth that will fit a ball or beanbag. Get the children to compete in getting the ball through the hole.

Prizes - If you want to give away some prizes for your Dinosaur party you should be able to find some theme related favor packs, dinosaur skeletons or dinosaur gliders, something that the kids will be able to do while home.

Party Favours

  • Clean and dry the buckets and spades used for the Dinosaur dig. Line with tissue paper and fill with Dinosaur goodies.
  • Alternatively, use our Dinosaur Party Bags and either fill with your selection of party bag fillers or purchase them readily pre-filled.
