DORA THE EXPLORER PARTY TIPS

Invitations

  • Make invitations in the shape of adventure items like binoculars and backpacks.
  • Passport invitations are great - photocopy the outside of a passport and add Dora stickers to the front. On the inside add your party details.
  • Invitations made from maps leading the guests to your party are also great.
  • Alternatively, if time is short, you may prefer our preprinted Dora the Explorer party invites.

Food and Preparation

  • You've enough to do on the day so why not prepare the food in advance and serve in handy colour co-ordinated Food Boxes to match your theme. Dora stickers can be used to decorate your food boxes, get the party boy or girl involved this is a job they'll love to do this. If it's hot food you want and on the quick, you can take your pre-prepared food boxes to a local Fish n' Chip shop and have them deliver your order.
  • Alternatively create your own Spanish party treats!

Taco bar - Let children make their own tacos. Have a selection of different fillings to choose from.

Salsa with tortilla chips and vegetable sticks

Monkey roll- Take a hotdog bun and put a peeled banana in it! You could also add peanut butter or honey.

Bugs on logs - Either celery sticks with peanut butter down the middle and raisins or bread sticks dipped in peanut butter and rolled in chocolate chips.

Worms in dirt - Crumbled cookies with gummy worms / snakes

Pineapple punch - Lemonade with Pineapple juice and sweetened raspberry juice

Décor

  • Create a tropical jungle for the guests to walk through. Use streamers and crepe paper in greens and browns to create hanging vines.
  • Cut large ovals from green paper and fringe the edges to make tropical leaves.
  • Make large brightly coloured tissue paper flowers.
  • Hang garlands of tissue flowers, streamers and balloons in bright colours
  • Hang Banners that say "Feliz Cumpleanos!" which is Spanish for "Happy Birthday".

Palm tree room roll  Hula Dancer scene setter

  • Use tablecloths, napkins, balloons and other decorative items such as streamers in Dora's colours; which are very tropical colours like red, yellow, orange, turquoise and purple. You can also look for Dora the Explorer Party Plates, Cups and Balloons that carry images of Dora on them.

Things to do

  • Dora loves to dress up. So do children. Supply loads of brightly coloured hats and scarves for the children to wear.
  • Dora bracelets - Let the children make Dora bracelets using elastic string and brightly coloured beads.
  • Ask an adult to dress up as Dora to give out the favors at the end of the party. You can take a photo of each guest with Dora as they receive their favor bag and send it to them with the thank you notes.

  • Pinata - If you've got time you can make your own Pinata. It's easy to do - simply layer strips of wet newspaper over a balloon leaving a small hole in the back. Allow to dry and repeat the process several times. Pop the balloon and stuff your Pinata with sweets and toys. Decorate in Dora the Explorer Party colours and hang from a piece of string. Children takes turns to bash the Pinata with a stick whilst blindfolded to release the prizes from within. This is a really fun party game but does take a bit of time and patience and an interest in arts and craft. Alternatively you may prefer to stuff a ready made Pinata.

DORA THE EXPLORER PARTY GAMES

To keep a party going, it’s always advisable to have a numerous supply of activities planned as the playing time of each game often far exceeds the time spent in planning them.

Keep the children busy - here are 8 of our favourites….

1. Monkey see, Monkey do

An adult or the birthday child is Boots the Monkey at first. Boots faces the rest of the group, who stand where they can see Boots well. Boots gives commands for the children to follow such as "Boots says...Clap your hands" or "Boots says...Kick your feet". The children are to obey only those commands that begin with the words "Boots says". If the command does not begin with these words (for example "Jump up and down") the players should ignore it. Anyone who does it is out.

2. Musical Sombreros

Place enough sombreros onto a table, ensuring there is enough for one per child. Play the music and get the children to walk around the table. When the music stops the children need to put a Sombrero on their heads. After each round take one hat away. Any child who doesn't have a Sombrero is out. The winner is the child left wearing the last Sombrero.

3. Dora, Dora, Swiper

Get all the children to sit in a circle. Choose one child to be "it". This child should then walk around the circle tapping the other children on the shoulder or head saying either "Dora" or "Swiper". If the child taps someone and says "Swiper" the child that has been tapped must get up and chase the child that is "it". If the child who is "it" gets the whole way round the circle and sits in the other space without being caught, the child who is Swiper then becomes "it".

4. Pin the tail on Boots the Monkey

Each player takes it in turns to be blindfolded and is given a "tail" with his/her name on it. With lots of encouragement from the other players the blindfolded player locates the Monkey and places the tail on the picture. Leave all the tails on the picture until everyone has has their turn. The winner is the person who gets closest to the correct place.

5. Dora's backpack

Get all the children to sit in a circle. Pass a small backpack around the circle to the music. When the music stops whoever is holding the backpack is out. The person left at the end is the winner and opens the backpack to recive their prize.

6. What's in the Mochilla (backpack)

Place some party prizes into a backpack, making sure there are more prizes than children. Get all the children to sit in a circle. Pass the backpack round the circle while playing music. When the music stops the child holding the backpack has to put his hand in and guess one of the objects in the bag. If they guess correctly they can keep that prize.

7. Follow Dora

Get the children to follow a leader (maybe start with an adult to get the ball rolling). The children have to follow whatever the leader does as they move around. Suggestions: hopping, hands on head, jumping, running, skipping, silly walks, turning round, waving arms, being an animal, being a posh person etc.

8. Sleeping Dora

All the children lie down on the floor with their eyes closed as if they were sleeping. One or two of the adults can be Boots. They must move around the slepping "Doras" and encourage them to wake (move, laugh, and giggle). They cannot touch the Doras, but they can move close and tell jokes. Any Dora that wakes can join Boots in trying to wake the others. The last Dora to wake is the winner.

Prizes - If you want to give away some prizes for your Dora the Explorer party you should be able to find some theme related colour books, Dora the Explorer bubbles or Stickers, something that the kids will be able to do while home.
