To keep a party going, it’s always advisable to have a numerous supply of activities planned as the playing time of each game often far exceeds the time spent in planning them.
Keep the children busy - here are 9 of our favourites….
1. Red Light, Green Light
One person is chosen to be Mr Plod. They stand at one end of the room or garden facing the wall or fence. All the other players are racers and line up at the other end of the garden. When Mr Plod says "Green Light" all the racers need to start moving (not run unless you use a field) towards Mr Plod. At any time Mr Plod can say "Red Light" and turn around. If he catches anyone moving they are out. Play resumes when Mr Plod turns back to the wall and says "Green Light". Mr Plod wins if all the racers are out before anyone touches him/her. If one of the racers touches Mr Plod before being caught then that person wins.
2. Noddy, Noddy, Mr Plod
Get all the children to sit in a circle. Choose one child to be "it". This child should then walk around the circle tapping the other children on the shoulder or head saying either "Noddy" or "Mr Plod". If the child taps someone and says "Mr Plod" the child that has been tapped must get up and chase the child that is "it". If the child who is "it" gets the whole way round the circle and sits in the other space without being caught, the child who is Mr Plod then becomes "it".
3. Big Ears says
An adult or the birthday child is Big Ears at first. Big Ears faces the rest of the group, who stand where they can see Big Ears well. Big Ears gives commands for the children to follow such as "Big Ears says...Clap your hands" or "Big Ears says...Kick your feet". The children are to obey only those commands that begin with the words "Big Ears says". If the command does not begin with these words (for example "Jump up and down") the players should ignore it. Anyone who does it is out.
4. Follow Bumpy Dog
Get the children to follow a leader (maybe start with an adult to get the ball rolling). The children have to follow whatever the leader does as they move around. Suggestions: hopping, hands on head, jumping, running, skipping, silly walks, turning round, waving arms, being an animal, being a posh person etc.
5. Sleeping Tessie Bears
All the children lie down on the floor with their eyes closed as if they were sleeping. One or two of the adults can be Gobbo and Sly. They must move around the sleeping "Tessie Bears" and encourage them to wake (move, laugh and giggle). They cannot touch the Tessie Bears but they can move close and tell jokes. Any Tessie Bears that wakes can join Gobbo and Sly in trying to wake the others. The last Tessie Bear to wake is the winner.
6. Pin the Bell on Noddy
Each player takes it in turns to be blindfolded and is given a "Bell" with his/her name on it. With lots of encouragement from the other players the blindfolded player locates the picture of Noddy and places the bell on the picture. Leave all the Bells on the picture until everyone has has their turn. The winner is the person who gets closest to the correct place.
7. Pass Noddy's Parcel
Start with a present wrapped in successive layers of paper with small prizes in between. Sit all the children in a circle and enlist one adult to be responsible for fair play!. And another to control the music. Hand the fully wrapped parcel to the birthday child. When the music starts the parcel is passed around the circle from child to child. At random intervals pause the music. When the music stops the child holding the present unwraps one layer as fast as possible. The child that reaches the prize in the middle wins. (Remember, the person controlling the music can peek to ensure everyone has a go at unwrapping).
8. Big Ears Balloon Toss
In a large space give some balloons out and get the children to keep all the balloons in the air for as long as possible while passing them to each other
9. Musical Bumpy Dog
The music is started and the kids must dance. When the music stops the kids must stand perfectly still. If any of them move noticeably they go out, judged by the person playing the music. If you can't decide then just play another round. Having two or three adults watching is better and they have to agree who goes out. If the last two or three kids are identical for 3 rounds at the end of the game then they all win. More leeway should be given to the little ones.
Prizes - If you want to give away some prizes for your Noddy party you should be able to find some theme related colour books, Noddy bubbles or Stickers, something that the kids will be able to do while home.
