Décor

  • Draw chalk train tracks to the front door for the guests to follow as they arrive
  • Have a large sign outside that says "Welcome to (child's name) station. This way to Platform (child's age)".
  • Use a plain white tablecloth or paper to cover the table. Use black construction paper to create a train track running down the length of the table.
  • Decorate the party area with Thomas Tank Birthday Banners and inflated Thomas the Tank Engine helium balloons.
  • Place a toy Thomas in to the centre of the tracks with balloons attached to him.
  • Use Thomas the Tank Engine party napkins, tablecovers, balloons and other decorative items such as streamers in Thomas the Tank Engine colours like Blues, Reds and Yellows. You can also look for Thomas the Tank Engine Party Plates, Cups and Balloons that carry images of Thomas on them.

Things to do

  • Cookie decorating - Before the party make train shaped cookies. Give all the children one cookie and let them decorate it with coloured icing and sweets.
  • Train decorating - Give the birthday child a card cut-out of a train engine and give all the guests a train carriage. Ask all the guests to decorate their piece and write a birthday message. At the end of the day, the birthday child will have a train to go on his wall that has been made by, and contains messages from all his friends.
  • On arrival give each child a boarding pass with a number on it. Through out the party pick out numbers at random. If a child has that number on their pass let them pick a prize from a lucky dip.
  • On arrival at the party, why not give your party guests a Thomas the Tank Engine Party Hat and a home made name badge. Draw the shape of a train onto a plain label using a blue or red marker pen. This idea is both effective and cost effective. It will also keep your sanity during the games!

  • Pinata - If you've got time you can make your own Pinata. It's easy to do - simply layer strips of wet newspaper over a balloon leaving a small hole in the back. Allow to dry and repeat the process several times. Pop the balloon and stuff your Pinata with sweets and toys. Decorate in Thomas the Tank Engine Party colours and hang from a piece of string. Children takes turns to bash the Pinata with a stick whilst blindfolded to release the prizes from within. This is a really fun party game but does take a bit of time and patience and an interest in arts and craft. Alternatively you may prefer to stuff a ready made Pinata.

THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE PARTY GAMES

To keep a party going, it’s always advisable to have a numerous supply of activities planned as the playing time of each game often far exceeds the time spent in planning them.

Keep the children busy - here are 10 of our favourites….

1. Pin the number on Thomas

Each player takes it in turns to be blindfolded and is given a number with his/her name on it. With lots of encouragement from the other players the blindfolded player locates the train and places the number on the picture. Leave all the numbers on the picture until everyone has has their turn. The winner is the person who gets closest to the correct place.

2. Thomas says

An adult or the birthday child is Thomas at first. Thomas faces the rest of the group, who stand where they can see Thomas well. Thomas gives commands for the children to follow such as "Thomas says...Clap your hands" or "Thomas says...Kick your feet". The children are to obey only those commands that begin with the words "Thomas says". If the command does not begin with these words (for example "Jump up and down") the players should ignore it. Anyone who does it is out.

3. Choo, Choo, Train

Get all the children to sit in a circle. Choose one child to be "it". This child should then walk around the circle tapping the other children on the shoulder or head saying either "Choo" or "Train". If the child taps someone and says "Train" the child that has been tapped must get up and chase the child that is "it". If the child who is "it" gets the whole way round the circle and sits in the other space without being caught, the child who is Train then becomes "it".

4. Follow Thomas

Get the children to follow a leader (maybe start with an adult to get the ball rolling). The children have to follow whatever the leader does as they move around. Suggestions: hopping, hands on head, jumping, running, skipping, silly walks, turning round, waving arms, being an animal, being a posh person etc.

5. Hot Train

Get all the children to sit in a circle. Pass a toy Thomas the Tank Engine around the circle to the music. When the music stops whoever is holding Thomas is out. The person left at the end is the winner.

6. Red Light, Green Light

One person is chosen to be the station master. They stand at one end of the room or garden facing the wall or fence. All the other players are trains and line up at the other end of the garden. When the station master says "Green Light" all the trains need to start moving towards the station master. At any time the station master can say "Red Light" and turn around. If he catches anyone moving they are out. Play resumes when the station master turns back to the wall and says "Green Light". The station master wins if all the trains are out before anyone touches him. If one of the trains touches the station master before being caught then the train wins and becomes the station controller in the next game.

7. Bean Bag Toss

Have several shoeboxes painted blue to depict Thomas's carriages. Get the children to try and throw bean bags into the carriages from a stationary point (the same place for each child although leeway maybe given for smaller kids). Award different prizes for different carriages.

8. Musical carriages

Arrange chairs in two lines back to back (make sure you have one chair for each child playing). When the music starts the children must walk around the chairs. When the music stops the children must sit on a chair. Start the music again and get the children to walk around. Remove one chair. Stop the music and the child left without a chair is out. Continue removing chairs until one chair remains. The winner is the child sitting in the last chair.

9. Pass the Coal

For this game you will need two children's buckets filled with balls of newspaper or black paper (coal). Put the children into two equal lines side by side and give the child at the front the bucket. On your mark, the child at the front needs to pass the bucket over his head to the next child who then passes it between his legs to the person behind who passes it over his head and so on. This continues until it gets to the person at the end of the line, who then races to the front and starts the process again. If any of the coal spills, the bucket has to go back to the start of the line. When all of the children in the line have had a turn of being at the front of the line, the entire train sits down. The first team to sit wins.

10. Coal hunt

Hide black rocks (coal) throughout the party area. Explain to the children that Thomas has lost the coal he needs to start his engine, and we need to find it so Thomas can get to the party or collect his passengers. Get the children to search for the coal. The child who finds the most gets a prize.

Prizes - If you want to give away some prizes for your Thomas the Tank Engine party you should be able to find some theme related Thomas the Tank Engine bubbles or Stickers, something that the kids will be able to do at home.
