Step 1

Step 1 of Pirate face painting design

Build up Snazaroo Ochre Yellow into a damp high density sponge.

Cover the whole face and blend the colour to avoid streaks.

Step 2

Load a damp sponge with Snazaroo Bright Red and sponge the forehead area above the eyebrow level to create a bandana.

Using a medium multi-purpose brush finish the edges of the bandana and create a knot effect at the end as shown.

Step 3

Step 3 of Pirate face painting design

With a fine flat brush, build up Snazaroo Black up to the edge and then outline the bandana.

Dip a stipple sponge into the Black and apply a stipple beard by dabbing against the skin. Do not rub.

Use a small triangular sponge (cut a round sponge into quarters) and create the eye patch with Snazaroo Black.

Finish details of the patch with a fine flat brush.

Step 4

Build up Snazaroo Black on a fine round brush to get a fine point for a Captain Hook type moustache. Start the moustache each side of the mid-lip cleft.

For the final touches use a medium multi purpose brush loaded with Snazaroo White paint to add dots onto the bandana.

Painting Tips

Before loading your Face Painting sponge with Snazaroo paint, ensure that the sponge is damp but not wet. Build the Snazaroo colour into the sponge to create a rich creamy texture. Never over wet the sponge or you will find you get a streaky uneven finish.

When using a thin fine line brush for detail, always build the colour into the brush and upto the tip. This is especially true when applying Black lines and detail to your design.

Cut a round face sponge into quarters to create smaller patterns such as spots and triangles.

If you are going to try and replicate this design for a number of children and want them all to be as similar as possible, enlist some help and asign each volunteer one face painting stage. Have the children move down the "production line" in turn and voila! - cloned faces for your party or production. This is a great idea for school events, carnivals and large parties.
