  • Paper chains in the colours of your theme look great and are cheap and easy to make!

Things to do

  • Hang a 1st birthday banner and ask all of your guests to sign it and add their best wishes
  • A special birthday gift for the birthday child is a time capsule. It is a gift that will capture how special the day is and will be very meaningful to your child when years later he/she opens it to find all of the love, good wishes, news from his first birthday. You can use anything for the capsule. You can decorate a box or toy container. Request on the invitations that your guests bring something meaningful to the party like newspaper headlines, weather report, top 10 songs/films etc and ask them all to write a wish for your child. You can also add special toys and keepsakes from his/her first year, a stuffed toy/favourite outfit

1st BIRTHDAY PARTY GAMES

To keep a party going, it’s always advisable to have a numerous supply of activities planned as the playing time of each game often far exceeds the time spent in planning them.

Keep the children busy - here are 7 of our favourites….

1. Pass the Parcel

Start with a present wrapped in successive layers of crepe paper with small prizes in between.

Sit all the children in a circle; enlist one adult to be responsible for fair play! And another to control the music. Hand the fully wrapped parcel to the birthday child. When the music starts the parcel is a passed around the circle child to child. At random intervals pause the music. When the music stops the child holding the present unwraps 1 layer as fast as possible. The child that reaches the prize in the middle wins.  (Remember the person controlling the music can peek to ensure every on has a go at unwrapping)

2. Duck, Duck, Goose

Get all the children to sit in a circle. Choose 1 child to be "it". This child should then walk around the circle tapping the other children on the shoulder or head saying either duck or goose. If the child taps some one and says goose the child that has been tapped must get up and chase the child who is "it". If the child who is "it" gets the whole way round the circle and sits in the other space without being caught  the child who is the goose then becomes "it"

3. Pin the Tail on the Donkey

Each player takes it in turns to be blindfolded and is given a donkey tail with his/her name on it. With lots of encouragement from the other players the blindfolded player locates the donkey and places the tail on the picture. Leave all the tails on the picture until everyone has had their turn. The winner is the person who gets closest to the correct place.

4. Follow the Leader

Get the children to follow a leader (maybe start with an adult to get the ball rolling). The children have to follow whatever the leader does as they move around. Suggestions: hopping, hands on head, jumping, running, skipping, silly walks, turning round, waving arms, being an animal, being a posh person, etc.

5. Hot Potato

Get all the Children to sit in circle. Pass a toy around the circle to the music. When the music stops whoever is holding toy is out. The person left at the end is the winner.

6. Simon Says

An adult or the birthday child is Simon at first. Simon faces the rest of the group, who stand where they can see Simon well. Simon gives commands for the children to follow, such as "Simon says, 'clap your hands,"' or "Simon says, 'Kick your feet." The children are to obey only those commands that begin with the words "Simon says." If the command does not begin with these words (for example, "Jump up and down"), the players should ignore winner. Anyone who does it is out.

7. Musical Statues

The music is started and the kids must dance. When the music stops the kids must stand perfectly still. If any of them move noticeably they go out, judged by the adult playing the music. If he can't decide then just play another round.
Having two or three adults judging is better, and they have to agree on who goes out. If the last two or three kids are identical for three rounds at the end of the game then they all win. More leeway should be given to little kids
