If you are planning a party and want to purchase a disposable helium tank to fill your balloons, you may be curious to know how to get the most out of your tank. Well, besides simply not wasting the helium (e.g. inhaling it so you can hear your voice get squeaky - not recommended really as helium not a gas conducive to supporting life!!!!) most of this is going to depend on the environment your balloons are in as well as the quality of the latex balloons you intend to inflate.
Typically the latex balloons that come free with a Helium tank are of a low grade latex and they are supplied by the manufacturer rather than the retailer from his shop floor. While they do make a great value party item, say for a kids party, the balloons will usually only last a couple of hours or so for your event, so for any other party or function I would always recommend getting good quality latex balloons to go with any disposable helium tank which will stay inflated for a longer period. You’ll need to remember though that a large disposable helium tank that fills 50 balloons, actually fills 50 of the 9 inch balloons supplied. If replacing these with 11 inch good quality latex balloons (the size you usually see at most parties and which you can get for around 15p each) the helium gas will fill around 25 balloons of this size.
Latex balloons have the longest float time when left indoors, usually about six hours before they start to shrink. Therefore, if you want to make sure your party balloons keep their size throughout your event it is best to keep them indoors until your party starts.
If you are getting eager, you should try to make yourself wait until an hour or so before the party starts before inflating your latex balloons. Although it can be tempting to prepare early, your balloons will begin to shrink! However you may be interested to hear that there is a product called Ultra Float that will dramatically extend the flight time of your latex balloons. This substance will in effect, create a new lining around the inside the balloon so that the helium has a harder time escaping out through the porous membrane. It’s easy to use, just one shot of the gel into the neck of the balloon, gently massaged in before inflation, will protect your balloon allowing you the opportunity to prepare for your party well ahead of time. This is the stuff the professionals use for weddings and displays to ensure their creations withstand the test of time and last for days rather than hours. This really is a fantastic product for parties or events where you just need just that little bit extra preparation time or if you have large numbers of balloons to fill. After all if you're inflating a hundred balloons or so you’ll need to consider just how long it will take you, and its just a little deflating to find the ones you originally filled, have already begun to shrink!
