Planning a birthday party for your young children can be a lot of fun for everybody especially if you get your children involved in the preparations. One thing that most children enjoy at their parties is a pinata, but instead of purchasing one, this year you might consider making one with your children. This will keep your child busy on a rainy day, but will help build up anticipation for the big party day!

You will need:

  • 2 cups of flour
  • 3 cups of water
  • 1 large latex balloon
  • Newspaper
  • Coloured crepe paper
  • Colouring supplies (crayons, markers, paint)
  • String
  1. Cut newspaper strips into one inch lengths and set aside.
  2. Mix the flour and water together until you have a thick paste that does not have any lumps in it.
  3. Blow up your balloon and tie it firmly at the end. You do not want the air to escape while you are covering it!
  4. Dip strips one by one and begin covering the balloon until it is completely covered. You only want one layer on the balloon for now, or it will pop! Also remember to leave a small hole at the top.
  5. Set the balloon aside to dry.
  6. Cover the balloon with another layer of newspaper remembering to avoid the hole you have left open at the top. Let it dry.
  7. Place one final layer over the balloon, watching the hole, so that you have completed three layers total and set the balloon aside to dry.
  8. Once the newspaper is completely dry, pop the balloon and remove it through the hole.
  9. Now you can decorate your pinata. If you want to make an animal shape, simply scrunch up newspaper inside rolled up card or paper, secure, and add to the balloon as appendages. You might use a Styrofoam ball from a craft shop for a head if you need one or alternatively you can make a separate piñata using a smaller balloon at the same time as making the body.
  10. Cover the entire pinata with crepe paper or paint .Decorate with your colouring supplies and attach strips of multicoloured crepe paper around the edges to finish your project!
  11. Now you can place the goodies inside your pinata, such as pocket money toys, haribo, or anything else you want to add keeping in mind not to place anything heavy or with sharp edges inside so that your guests or you will not get hurt by the falling objects.
  12. Seal the hole with strong tape and punch two small holes near the top - now your pinata is ready to hang for your party!
