When we host a birthday party for one of our children, the question of party bags, and what to fill them with, inevitably will arise. For me, few components of the party will cause as much anxiety as these party bags. I will be judged as a party host by both children and their parents. As much as I would like to just forget about the party bags, I can't. The pressure is on. What can I do?
In some cases, it is easy to follow the theme of the party. This is my favorite choice, and often the path of least resistance. A Spiderman themed party calls for a Spiderman themed party bag. A Disney Princess themed party calls for a Disney Princess themed party bag. Dinosaur party? You get the idea.
This does get a little more complicated when you have both boys and girls attending a party. My daughter went to a ballerina party where there were both boys and girls. The girls loved the mini tutus that came in the party bags. The boys, well, not so much. Pay attention to the television programs your kids are watching. Often they are great clues as to what is popular with children in certain age groups. Listen to what toys or movies your kids talk about. This sounds like obvious advice, and things that parents should do anyway, but take note-popular themes will emerge, and you will have a list of ideas for party bags.
Finally, pay attention to what they are bringing home from other parties. Your kids friends parents are struggling with these same issues. Make sure you are not the third parent in a row to throw a Scooby Doo themed party. Your kids will be very disappointed, and their friends will be less enthusiastic about coming to yet another party with a Scooby Doo themed party bag.
